Indian honey bees (Apis cerena indica) are a common bees which can be domesticated and they are not too agressive, hence it is ideal for apiculture. They play an important role in the pollination of agricultural produce. Also it is a good supplement to regular sugar.
This honey is collected from the coastal areas by the responsible bee- keepers of Puttur region in  Dakshina Kannada dist., where the vegetation mainly composes of Rubber, Areca and Coconut.

  • This honey is good substitute to the regular sugar and good for dietary purpose. 

    Crystalization is a natural process. Honey may darken and lose its aroma and flavour, depending on the changes in temperature, and is an indication of pure honey which is natural.

  1. To begin with we first started to collect Rock bee honey from the ‘land of Soligas”, i.e., Bilirgiri Ranganathana Betta or B R Hills. Here the hills is the confluence of India’s western and eastern ghats comprising rich biodiversity along with indigenous Soliga people’s honey collecting tradition at an altitude range of 1400-1800 meters, making the honey valuable for health. The Indian Rock bees (Apis dorsata) nest either in the rocky cliffs or in huge branched trees.

  2. At the foot hills of B R hills where the vegetation is dry deciduous or scrub forest, the type of honey bees also changes like the Small-bee or red-dwarf bee (Apis florea). The honey is also precious as the bees only produce very small amount of nutritious honey. Even the Stingless bees or Indian Dammar bees (Tetragonula iridipennis) are found in the crevices of rocks and they are highly medicinal in nature. The Indian honey bees (Apis cerena indica) are also found wildly in the anthill or in the tree cavities.

  3. Collecting Rock bee honey from Yellapura area in Uttara Kannada district is another challenge as the terrain is semi evergreen forests and the Siddi community are brave enough to venture into extraction of honey from high cliffs or high trees. We can see sacred honey bee colonies in the most famous Yana caves, similarly there are many places where Indian Rock bees are found deep inside the lush green forests. Here the Indian Bee honey (Apis cerena indica) is harvested both wild form and also in the domesticated form.

  4. The Rock bee honey in the Malnad region or from other places is harvested with the help of Siddi Community or indigenous tribes of Chamarajanagara. The honey is unique as it has both cash crops like coffee or areca along with wild trees. The colour and aroma of the honey changes from season to season depending upon the flowering patterns. Some honey looks dark and some lighter; some sweeter or some bitter or sour.

  5. Collecting the exclusive Stingless bee honey from the fringes of scrub forests in the tiger reserve of Bandipura by an expert honey enthusiast is a great boon to our collection. Giving very less yield and so much high in medicinal values, having this honey in our collection is a must.

  6. We also collect honey from the responsible bee keepers of Puttur region in the coastal district Dakshina Kannada. Here the major flowering tree is either rubber or areca along with coconut and some lesser flowering flora.

The honey is collected in limited quantity to make sure that the gene pool of the honey bees is not destroyed.
